Dave Johnson - Illustrator

When it comes to commercial artists, Dave Johnson  (Waverley Avenue) can only be described as one of the‘last of the vintage’.

Qualifying, with distinction in illustration, at Exeter College of Art in the early 70’s, Dave has been in huge demand from major publishers, agencies and newspapers for over 30 years ... not least The Times and Allied Domecq plc. His diverse range of styles and ability to research every detail have ensured a constant flow of work. But the deadlines and demands of the publishing world are often relentless; Dave recalls – 'there was a period in the late 70’s when I was turning out over 20 illustrations a week for the Pergamon Press History of Aircraft... with no excuses for the wrong insignia or colour of camouflage on a Spitfire!'

The few examples reproduced here hardly begin to demonstrate the extent of Dave’s ability. In conversation with him you are not only highly entertained by his sharp wit, you are left convinced that few share his knowledge of illustration or will ever match his dedication to the profession.

Currently, Dave is working in his home studio and is moving towards more fine-art painting and experimentation with new techniques and materials.
